What makes a project Behavior Driven?

This article is a guest post written by Alex, an Independent IT QA Consultant, with over 6 years of experience, specialized in infrastructure, telecom, defense and security.

Having been previously exposed to the Test Driven Development (TDD) practices at the beginning of my career in IT QA, the ancestor of current BDD practices, I have had a first-hand experience with the ups and downs arising from a poorly managed requirements development process and learned not to put expectations very high in regards to initial system architecture at a certain scale.What makes a project Behavior Driven

Agile Management & the four types of trust within a team

When trust between business partners disappears the business may very well disappear too or, best case scenario, the partners may break up and follow different roads. At first, the one who suffers is the performance of the team and the debates will be shadowed by suspicions and assumptions.

Jurgen Appelo in Management 3.0 has a theory on how many types of trust exist within a team (source http://www.management30.com/).
In a few words there are FOUR:
– Trust in your own person that you can make it;
– Trust in the same level colleagues;
– Manager’s trust in the team members;
– The trust of the team in the manager;
Which is the most important one? Which one should never disappear?
I believe they are all equally important and should be treated accordingly inside any team.
From the manager’s point of view his trust in the team disappears (or has already disappeared ?) when he starts playing the policeman, implementing tracking and controlling actions.
The team will respond in its turn with the same suspicions, embracing a more circumspect and reserved position.
How do we get here? Stress, insufficiently trained managers, teams that never reached the norming stage.

A night at the … theatre

A night at the … theatre

A night at the … theatre

No, unlike the Queen album, we didn’t go to the opera … we chose the next best thing – the theatre.

But let us first disclose the unknowns:

“We” – stands for the executive staff team, plus one guest from another team, which remains undisclosed for confidentiality purposes; 🙂

“Theatre” – the play “Dragostea dureaza trei ani”, beautifully performed by four talented actors at Café Godot.

Now let’s start with the beginning.

Java User Group edition #9 at 1&1 Internet Development

JUG edition 9

JUG edition #9 @ 1&1 Internet

This is a guest post written by Eugen Stan, BJUG member.

BJUG #10 is closing in fast. In less than two weeks we meet again, and get another chance to find out new stuff about new and exciting technologies, but more important about each other. That is the reason why we, Andrei and Mihai, started JUG Bucharest almost one year ago and that is the reason why I constantly remind people to share ideas and get to know each other better.

I’m a strong believer that people drive things forward, and that technologies, frameworks and programming languages are just tools.

JUG 10 looks popular, but it still has some catching up to do before it reaches the same popularity as JUG #9, which managed to fill the 100 places conference room from the 10th floor at 1&1 Internet Development.

A new step in improving the 1&1 Mobile Experience

Knowledge is power..

Knowledge is power..

Smartphones are not just simple gadgets; they are creating a strong emotional relation with their users. They are close at hand; they are the shortest way to reach people who matter; they keep our most important memories, and they help us do our job better. As a marketer, I strongly believe that mobile applications are the type of applications that can create the highest engagement with the users. In the same time, the challenging part is how to fulfill the higher and higher expectations of the users.

The beginning

The end of this spring kept us busy. We had many ideas about how we could help our customers have a better experience on their Smartphones, and we looked for awesome people, who would make our idea happen. At the end of June we had already all the heroes of our story: Development for iOS and Android, QA, User Experience and Copywriting – or more exactly, a strong team, able to organize, innovate and adapt in a highly agile environment… all of that in our fast growing office in Bucharest.

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

Last December, our team celebrated (this calls for a beer! :)) the launch of the biggest update of the new Help Center, thus marking the decommissioning of the last old components in the system. In 2012 we managed to completely rewrite the help center to take advantage of the latest software technologies. This was a big project and we had a lot recruiting for our team.

Actually, we doubled our team, and I feel that we somehow rebuilt it as a whole around this project. We all grew attached to different parts of the Help Center, and we tried to make the most of what we really liked. That is why we managed to make so many improvements that reach through all aspects of the project.

The new architecture we’ve designed has increased reliability, a reduced dependency to other systems, and enhanced internationalization support.

How to build a scalable frontend framework (Part 1 of 2)

RAIN (Rapid Application INtegration) is a highly scalable frontend platform that orchestrates distributed rendering of loosely coupled components. It uses standard web technologies (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3) on the client-side and NodeJS on the server-side. RAIN works on modern browsers and next generation devices (tablets, smart phones). It enables developers to focus on their core competence by providing simple feature reusage and tooling. The project is open-source and you can find it here.
