Thoughts From An Intern

Internship @1&1

Internship @1&1

This is a guest post written by Sorin P. our intern for a week.

Here are Sorin’s thoughts on his one week internship at 1&1 Internet Development, what he learnt and what he believes the future holds for him:

I have decided to see if it is really as hard to work for IT companies as people usually say. Although, you might say I am too young to have worked for a company, I can state that I experienced many interesting things in the time I was at 1&1 Internet.

When I first came here, I was very surprised that everyone was very relaxed during the work they were doing. Secondly, I would like to point out something that in my opinion is very important and should be done

A new step in improving the 1&1 Mobile Experience

Knowledge is power..

Knowledge is power..

Smartphones are not just simple gadgets; they are creating a strong emotional relation with their users. They are close at hand; they are the shortest way to reach people who matter; they keep our most important memories, and they help us do our job better. As a marketer, I strongly believe that mobile applications are the type of applications that can create the highest engagement with the users. In the same time, the challenging part is how to fulfill the higher and higher expectations of the users.

The beginning

The end of this spring kept us busy. We had many ideas about how we could help our customers have a better experience on their Smartphones, and we looked for awesome people, who would make our idea happen. At the end of June we had already all the heroes of our story: Development for iOS and Android, QA, User Experience and Copywriting – or more exactly, a strong team, able to organize, innovate and adapt in a highly agile environment… all of that in our fast growing office in Bucharest.

An untold story of impediments

The untold story of impediments

The untold story of impediments

Once upon a time there was a beautiful forest. Trees were growing vigorously all around, spreading their seeds and nourishing the soil with their leaves every autumn. Birds and animals were living happy, sheltered under the canopy of branches.

Till one day when a new tree started to grow inside the forest. But that was not something new, you might say. Yet, the new tree was not a usual one – it got bigger with every day, casting a thicker shadow over its surroundings until it was clear to the entire forest that its size and appetite were extraordinary. Leaves of the trees around this greedy one started to turn pale, withering more and more. Around the big tree was growing a larger circle of emptiness, as he was spreading his branches to capture all the sun and all the rains, leaving nothing for the others.

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

The New Year Brought the New 1&1 Help Center

Last December, our team celebrated (this calls for a beer! :)) the launch of the biggest update of the new Help Center, thus marking the decommissioning of the last old components in the system. In 2012 we managed to completely rewrite the help center to take advantage of the latest software technologies. This was a big project and we had a lot recruiting for our team.

Actually, we doubled our team, and I feel that we somehow rebuilt it as a whole around this project. We all grew attached to different parts of the Help Center, and we tried to make the most of what we really liked. That is why we managed to make so many improvements that reach through all aspects of the project.

The new architecture we’ve designed has increased reliability, a reduced dependency to other systems, and enhanced internationalization support.

What is it like to be a conceptual designer?

What is it like to be a conceptual designer

What is it like to be a conceptual designer

Not very hard but it’s definitely not easy either…

It is really a responsibility that you cannot treat superficially and with ease of mind.

When I made the change in my career to become a conceptual designer, and to focus mainly on user experience, I did not know for sure what this change would bring, and what to really expect.

As a visual designer, the whole creativity is channeled towards creating a beautiful work that is not necessarly easy to use as it is to look at. Functionality is somewhere down there, it is something the designer hears about, but doesn’t really care.

Purpose: support people with physical disabilities by selling bags

Last month brought us a little surprise from our partner in environmental issues, the “Viitor Plus” NGO.  They came and presented us their project named “Atelierul de panza”.

It all started with the idea of counter pollution of plastic bags, and soon appeared canvas bags as environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic bags, besides a little workshop was organized.

“Atelierul de Panza” is an environmental protection project, but it is also a social and professional one; it seeks to integrate, socio-professionally, people with physical disabilities, who face a difficult life and support themselves by selling bags.

Their work had great success among our colleagues. Hope we will see them soon with new ideas.

Who’s Afraid of… Public Speaking?

Holding a presentation seems to be a very simple thing. Until you find yourself in the situation to actually hold one. Suddently a lot of questions come to your mind. How to structure your material so that it can be easily understood? How to handle the first minutes, if your mouth is dry due to the stage fright? What to do if the public is hostile, or bored, or tired…?

These questions (and many more) constantly accompanied me in every occasion when I had to present something in front of a group. No matter the group componence (teachers, colleagues, or friends), or the topic approached, I had never found suitable answers to them.

Running for fun & health

1&1 Internet Running Team

1&1 Running Team

When did I start?

It all started in June 2011, when I needed to do some exercise for my health due to a sedentary day-to-day schedule. During the first sessions indoors, I was barely able to run 500 m (besides the other exercises I was doing). Although I was not a fan of running, I discovered over time that I like to run. When it got warm outside, I started to run with friends / colleagues from my company, both in parks and at the National Stadium.

Where am I now?

After one and a half years of training, I am now able to run about 10 km in one hour. So, I joined
