Linux Filemonitor released as Free Software by 1&1

We, at 1&1, are using Free Software in almost all aspects of our work, and we are happy when we can even contribute to the Free Software community.

Linux Filemonitor is the first software to be released under GPLv2 by the Romanian Linux Development Core team.

Linux Filemonitor (or linux-filemon) is an experimental kernel patch developed by 1&1 which provides dentry-based file event notifications for the entire virtual filesystem.

Why could this be of any interest?

Because it’s the missing piece of Linux for scalable

It’s good to be back!

Although a foreign languages graduate, I must admit, when it comes to writing I am not in the top ten list, maybe also due to the fact that I was raised by two engineers…

Well, when there’s a will, there’s a way… so, I will try to survive this task in one piece. 🙂

When I first came to 1&1 I found myself lost in an unfamiliar and weird world… the corporate environment. After having worked for almost fifteen years in a medium sized Romanian company, where everybody knew everybody and the wages were paid cash – because the financial manager hated the idea of people losing money with bank commissions 🙂 – I ended up in a world, where one could be found on the intranet, where

How we can manage the (organizational or personal) ‘change’

Have you ever felt the desire to pilot a plane? To enjoy like a child the multitude of buttons and watch through the porthole? Perhaps the boys. Maybe some of the girls, too.

Some time ago, before I started to hold courses for people in the IT industry, I used to feel like that. I was thinking that this environment should somehow resemble an advanced cockpit, where you are pulled by the ears if you press the wrong button, while if you press the wrong lever…the plane goes into a tailspin, and crash is unavoidable.

1&1 is moving @

My story is about what happened in the last two years, about the new colleagues, and about the new office spaces.

The day I was hired I had almost 80 colleagues. My first day here was also the day when the second floor was taken. Though it was not fully equipped, people were already occupying the new space. It was quite confusing.

In a few days everything had changed: thing calmed down and plans of taking another floor started to appear.

A couple of months later the third floor offered its space for us. It had to be arranged quickly, because new colleagues were coming every day.

The last year was the busiest: further three floors were taken, and the needs of arranging them differed. The teams were bigger and the ways of working also differed, so we faced the challenge of finding best solutions of space arrangements.

Right now, one of the floors gets a new face. Stay tuned to see what happens. 🙂

A Team That Grows With Its Projects

Today’s “Server and WebHosting Applications” team started as “Server Platforms Development” some time ago, but I will tell the story since June 2011, when I became part of it. As any successful entity, the team had to change over time, to adapt both in structure and focus. During my time here its spirit seems to have remained a constant, fascinating mixture of very different personalities and skills, somehow like the American “melting pot” theory.

When I first arrived in 1&1 within the server platforms, I found a very diverse group of

Being Agile is a trip, not a destination

At a first glance Agile development framework seems simple, attractive and effective. Most probably that’s why a lot of software companies have embraced it as a path toward their success, but as simple as it may look, being agile is not that straight forward. Being a framework, not a standard, there is always the need to fill the empty spaces with processes and tools that fit the organization and the business goals. That’s why we invite you, dear reader, to accompany us on a journey throughout the Agile Manifesto, taking each principle that is stated in this valuable document and looking it carefully through the eyes of the Project Management Office of

Tips to build your business: Seven ways to get great referrals

The most effective advertising a company can get is more difficult to achieve but much more effective and lasting than traditional media advertising. It is word of mouth advertising and it’s earned rather than purchased. It is your customers’ opinion of your product, which can fluctuate from very vocal with praise to very vocal with derision.

Word of mouth is available to start-ups as well as large corporations. It can be achieved with minimal cash outlays by just doing things right. Word of mouth can be earned quickly or over a long period of time, depending on the product or service you are selling, and sometimes it’s instantaneous. After people view a new movie, they

How to establish a FTP connection using Dreamweaver MX

The post below originally appeared on 1and1 US blog and was written by Micah Magruder.

The main method that our shared hosting customers use to connect to their web space is File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
Using a FTP client, you can connect to your 1&1 web space remotely to upload and download files.
You can use Adobe Dreamweaver MX, a website building software, to establish an FTP connection.

Before you get started, make sure you have the following:
